Everyone has heard of epsom salts for soaking after a round of golf or vigorous sports, but then there are the Dead Sea Salts, Himalayan Sea Salts & Celtic Sea Salts.

How do you know what the differences are? Are there any?
What are the specific benefits of each, both topically or ingesting?

If you suffer from:
  • arthritis
  • rheumatism
  • fibromyalgia
  • psoriasis
  • muscle aches & pains
  • leg cramps
  • eczema
Then there is a good chance you can benefit from epsom and dead sea salt soaks. The University of Maryland Medical Center states that sulfur soaks, including sulfur springs and Epsom salt baths, also reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, psoriasis, eczema, dandruff and warts. (Warning: Sulfur can cause respiratory issues and reactions, check with your doctor before going into sulfur spring pools etc.)

Dead Sea and Epsom salts vary in source and composition but provide similar healing benefits. Epsom salts, originally made famous by the mineral baths in Epsom, England, may be derived from a variety of natural sources; however, Dead Sea mineral salts must come from the Dead Sea, a saline lake located 400 meters below sea level in Israel.
Epsom salts contain high levels of magnesium and sulfates, whereas Dead Sea mineral salts contain high levels of magnesium, potassium, calcium chloride, sodium and bromide. Sulphates or sulfur is a part of some of the amino acids in your body and is involved in protein synthesis, as well as several enzyme reactions It helps with the production of collagen, which is a substance that forms connective tissues, cell structure and artery walls. Additionally, it is a part of keratin, giving strength to hair, skin and nails.

Both types of salts provide various nourishing elements which absorb through the skin through topical use.  The nutrients provided vary according to the type of salt, but both salts benefit similar conditions.

Did you know that by soaking your whole body or even just your feet in epsom salts, you can increase your internal magnesium levels?

What does THAT do you ask?
Magnesium is essential for your muscles to work properly and  helps you avoid the need for muscle relaxers. It has been proven that low magnesium is related to high inflammation in the body.

Dead Sea salts and Epsom salts provide nutritive elements through absorption by the skin. Individuals visit the Dead Sea to experience mud baths and soak in the mineral rich waters. Homes and hospitals also use Dead Sea and Epsom salt baths in the treatment of skin and muscular conditions. While research supports external use of Dead Sea salts and Epsom salts, always seek the advice of your personal physician before selecting a specific treatment.
